The Tech Inc. SF6 Gas Handling Cart recovers, filters, dries, stores and refills the sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) insulating gas in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and SF6 circuit breakers. It draws the gas out of a compartment before maintenance, cleans it and holds it in a 300 L storage vessel, then evacuates air and moisture from the compartment and refills it to rated pressure. The gas is reused and none is vented to atmosphere, which matters because SF6 has a warming effect about 24,300 times that of CO2.

Main components

  • 300 L storage vessel for recovered gas
  • Oil-free compressor and vacuum pump, proven components from leading makers
  • Particle filters and dryer cartridges that remove dust, moisture and decomposition products
  • Valve manifold, pressure gauges and pressure switches
  • Hoses with self-sealing couplings to the switchgear
  • Control panel with recovery, evacuation and filling sequences
  • Wheeled steel frame with lifting points

Safety and environmental features

  • Pressure switches that stop the compressor at the set storage pressure, backed by a relief valve
  • Interlocks that keep the vacuum pump from discharging to atmosphere until the SF6 has been recovered
  • Self-sealing couplings that keep the gas in the hoses and switchgear when they are disconnected
  • Filters that capture decomposition products from arced gas, protecting operators and the stored gas
  • Emergency stop and fault alarms on the control panel

Applications: commissioning, maintenance, extension and decommissioning of GIS, gas-insulated lines and SF6 circuit breakers at transmission and distribution substations, power plant switchyards and industrial substations.
