The Tech Inc. SF6 Gas Handling Trailer (model TI-SGC600T) recovers, filters, dries, stores and refills sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) at extra-high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). Built for 400–765 kV GIS, where gas compartments are large, it carries a 600 L storage vessel with its compressor and vacuum pump on a towable trailer that moves between substations. The gas is recovered, cleaned and reused, and none is vented. This matters because SF6 has a warming effect about 24,300 times that of CO2.
Main components
- 600 L storage vessel for recovered gas
- Oil-free compressor and vacuum pump, proven components from leading makers, sized for large compartments
- Particle filters and dryer cartridges for dust, moisture and decomposition products
- Valve manifold, pressure gauges and pressure switches
- Hose reels with self-sealing couplings
- Control panel with recovery, evacuation and filling sequences
- Road-towable trailer with weatherproof enclosure
Safety and environmental features
- Pressure switches that stop the compressor at the set storage pressure, backed by a relief valve
- Interlocks that keep the vacuum pump from discharging to atmosphere until the SF6 has been recovered
- Self-sealing couplings that keep the gas in the hoses and switchgear when they are disconnected
- Filters that capture decomposition products from arced gas, protecting operators and the stored gas
- Emergency stop and fault alarms on the control panel
Applications: commissioning, maintenance, bay extension and decommissioning of 400–765 kV GIS and gas-insulated lines at transmission substations and power plant switchyards.
